It is NOT recommended that you install Windows 2000 Pro on your home machine. Windows 2000 Pro is a replacement for Windows NT. On September 14, 2000, Microsoft will release Windows 2000 ME which will be a replacement for Windows 98. We will have Windows ME available shortly after it is released.
The following is only a Quick Start Guide. A manual giving the full procedure is available for review at Science Support Services.
If you are upgrading, backup your critical files. Upgrades sometimes go very sour. All files can be lost
Before upgrading, you should make sure that your hardware is compatible with Windows 2000 and that your software will run under 2000. Check the following URL's.
Hardware: Check here
Software: Check here
133 MHz processor or higher
64 megabytes (MB) of RAM recommended. (32 MB minimum)
2 GB hard disk with 650 MB of free space
VGA or higher resolution monitor, keyboard, and mouse
A CD-ROM drive (see Science Support Services for alternative installation procedures if you do not have a CD-ROM drive)
If this is a new installation on the College of Science Network, you will need to obtain a unique IP number for your machine. Contact your network administrator for an IP number.
Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive. If the CD is automatically detected, answer YES when asked if you want to automatically upgrade your computer.
If windows does not automatically detect the CD, Click start, and then run. Type d:\i386\winnt32.exe (where d: is the drive designation of your CD_ROM)
Newer machines may be able to boot off the CD-ROM. It might be necessary to make some changes in your bios to allow the machine to boot off the CD-ROM.
If the machine will not boot off the CD-ROM, you will need a set of boot floppy disks. You can obtain them from Science Support Services. Or you can make your own set by following these procedures.
Prepare 4 blank floppy disks. Label as disk 1, disk 2, etc.
Click Start, and then Run
Type d:\bootdisk\Makeboot.exe a: (where d: is the CD-ROM drive)
Follow instructions on the screen.
